AI Fix for John Deere Apex™ Desktop Software in 2026

This is my attempt to educate the general public with news of changes affecting owners and prospective owners of John Deere Precision Ag products and services. I do NOT represent corporate John Deere. I do NOT represent any John Deere dealers. Content on this website should be considered as-is without warranty or guarantee. Please contact your local John Deere dealership with any questions, comments or concerns. Note: The content of this article was NOT written by any form of AI (artificial intelligence).

FIXED: 2026 Calendar Year Causes Loss of Activations Apex™ Desktop Software

In my last article, I described the need to set your computer date and time prior to calendar year 2026 in order to get past the "Failed to activate GreenStar Apex" and open Apex. Now, with the help of Claude Opus 4.6 AI (Artificial Intelligence), a fix is within reach for anyone with a little bit of computer skills.

Since this is modification of a software file which I did not originally create, I feel I cannot  distribute the file in such a public manor; However I am willing to share the process of how you can create the fix yourself with the file on your computer and a bit of AI.

It's important to note this process only works on computers where Apex was previously activated before John Deere ended sales/activations of Apex. This process does NOT generate activation codes, nor modify the activation code system to do anything other than expand the acceptable end date range from 2025 to 2098.

Which the help of https://claude.ai I was able to find the date check that causes the error in 2026, lives in a file called ACA.dll. Claude allowed me to upload this file and the AI then proceeded to slightly modify the file to expand the date range check function and allow the program to open once again.

Note: I used Claude OPUS 4.6 on the Pro Plan to accomplish this. You'll need to come up with the prompt yourself and you may run into limits or need to get creative to accomplish this task with AI.

The ACA.dll file is located on your computer here:

I renamed the original ACA.dll to "ACA.old.dll" before loading the modified ACA.dll file from Claude and pasting it into the same location. Once the modified file is in place, you may set your computer's date and time back to current and launch Apex as normal.

You might ask, why fix Apex?
A) Ops Center does not do background maps for GS3 2630 displays, Surface Water Pro/Plus planning, nor setup files or reading of files for Original GreenStar™ / BrownBox Displays
B) I can run Apex in my sleep - and it loads all the machine and implement types in all setup profiles (machine types and implement types CANNOT be created on the display)
C) Because I can - some of us still like using the old stuff - I even prefer the creation of variable rate seeding prescriptions in Apex because I have my zones set perfectly and just want to change seeding rates. And because setting your computer date and time backwards can have bad effects on all kinds of things.
D) I don't care how much you dislike(d) Apex, so don't waste your time complaining to me

Shoutout to Nick Horob and his AI On Your Farm training program for introducing me to Claude and giving me confidence you don't need to be a computer programmer to write or fix software.

NOTE: These is a relatively extreme workaround and can carry risk and unintended consequences. This information is provided as-is without warranty - Do NOT call, text or email me asking for help - I will not be providing any outside help with this issue. If you feel strongly Apex should have an official fix, feel free to provide feedback to John Deere or your local dealer.
